Ganesh Chaturthi 2023: The Birth of a Festival
Shivaji made a clay model of Ganesha to celebrate the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi, a custom that originates from the times of the Maratha dynasty. This festival marks Ganesha’s birth or rebirth.
Why Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated?
However, Shivaji made it big in order to unite Hindu leaders from the nearby Hindu Subas and kingdoms to strengthen the Maratha position against the Mughals.
To further unite Indians, Lokmanya Tilak and Bhausaheb Laxman Javale revived the tradition in Pune in 1894 by organizing the first-ever Sarvajanin Ganesh Utsav.
Ganesh Chaturthi 2023 Celebrations
The festival takes place on elaborate pandals with chants of Vedic hymns and Hindu texts such as prayers and fasting are observed.
As part of the daily prayers, sweets such as modaka, which is believed to be the favorite food of Lord Ganesh, are distributed from the pandal to the community
Since then, India celebrates Ganesh Puja with great pomp and display. Every community, not just Hindus, participates in the Ganesh Utsav.
Vinayaka Chaturthi 2023
Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, is a 10-day Hindu festival, observed during Ganesha’s birthday.
The celebration lasts for ten days and culminates on Ananta Chaturdashi when idols are immersed in local water bodies. Thousands of idols are submerged each year in Mumbai alone.
When is Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrated?
Every year, Ganesh Chaturthi is observed between 22 August and 20th of September in the Gregorian calendar.
In 2023, Ganesh Chaturthi will be celebrated on Wednesday, 31 August 2023.
Ganesh Chaturthi Pooja & Rituals
During the 10-day festival, four main rituals are performed. Pranapratishhtha, Shhodashopachara, Uttarpuja, and Ganpati Visarjan are among them.
Many homes, temples, and localities display beautiful Ganesha idols. The statue is also decorated with flowers and garlands. An ancient ritual called Pranapratishhtha involves chanting mantras to bring life to the deity.
16 different types of prayers are then offered to Ganesha’s idol. It is called Shhodashopachara.
Religious songs are sung and played, drumbeats are danced to, and fireworks are used to enhance the festive mood.
There is then a ritual performed to bid farewell to Ganesha in deep respect, called Uttarpuja. Next, Ganpati Visarjan is performed, during which the statue is now submerged in water.
Ganesh Chaturthi Sweets
During the celebrations of Ganesha, the puja concludes with the offering to Lord Ganesha of 21 sweet dumplings, known as MODAKs, as prasad. For this purpose, rice flour shell modaks are preferred; however, wheat shell versions are also used.
Additionally, a variety of innovative recipes has been developed for modaks such as banana nachni modak, motichoor modak, and chocolate modak, to name a few.
