Gurupurab, Guru Nanak Jayanti, or Prakash Utsav are some of the most important and auspicious days in Sikhism.
As the first founder of the Sikh religion and the first of the Gurus, Guru Nanak Dev was born on this day.
Raised in Rai-Bhoi-di Talwandi, a former district of Shekhupura in Pakistan. The popular name given to this place is Nanakana Sahib.
The Sikh community considers this festival to be one of the holiest on the Hindu lunar calendar.
The western calendar shows that the full moon for Kartik occurs around November.
On this occasion, however, we will commemorate Guru Nanak’s 551st birth anniversary.
Guru Nanak Jayanti will be celebrated in India on Tuesday, 8th November.
Sikhs around the world will celebrate this day with great enthusiasm.
Depending on the Indian lunar calendar, Gurpurab’s date can vary from year to year.
People exchange greetings, decorate their houses with lights, and visit Gurudwaras. India celebrates this day as one of its most symbolic religious holidays.
In the Sikh tradition, this day commemorates the holy guru Guru Nanak, and it reminds us that the five vices of sin are lust, greed, attachment, anger, and pride, and we must avoid them at all costs to serve God.
To honor Guru Nanak’s life and teachings, Sikhs and other Indians take part in many activities.
The Akhand Path entails a series of readings held at central locations in major Sikh cities a few days before Guru Nanak Jayanti starts.
It requires participants to attend the readings for at least 48 hours. Sikhism’s holy text, the Guru Granth Sahib, is recited en masse during Akhand Path.
There are also prayers at specific times during Akhand Path. During this holiday, the most commonly offered prayers are those for Japji Sahid and Sidh-Ghost.
Sikhs participate in Nagarkitan, a colorful procession that attracts visitors from all over the world the day before the festival.
As part of this procession, the Five Beloved Ones lead the way with the Sikh flag. Martial artists, musicians, and choreographers also take part in the parade.
A variety of banners and floral arrangements are often placed along the route of the procession.
A free community lunch will be served on the full moon day during the month of Katak for those celebrating Guru Nanak Jayanti.
There are many evening prayer sessions following the meal held on Jayanti.
